What is carpet tile?

They are exactly what they sound like: tiles made from carpet, and they are becoming more and more popular. Carpet tiles are created the same way that a standard carpet is, however they are cut into smaller pieces. Usually carpet tiles are cut into 2 x 2 ft squares or 1 x2 ft rectangles. Depending on the manufacturer, you may even be able to find carpet tiles cut into different shapes likes hexagons, pentagons and even triangles.

Each carpet tile has a backing that creates a smooth, even surface for installation and gives the tile some structure. These backings aren’t as soft and plushy as regular carpeting, but they still allow for comfort and warmth, as well as helping with the acoustics of the room.

What are the benefits?

One of the biggest benefits of carpet tile is that installing it means that you can replace one tile without disturbing the rest. Imagine that you are doing crafts with the kids and you spill glue all over the floor. You can remove that one tile and replace it with another. Or even if you spill your morning coffee - Can’t get the stain out? No problem! You just remove that one tile and replace it with another. What are they made from?

Not all carpet tiles are the same, which means they can be made from a variety of fibres that will affect the feel, durability, and performance of the carpet. Here is a quick breakdown of some of the most common carpet fibres.

• Nylon: This is the most popular carpet fibre, because it’s durable, static-free, and often treated with a stain-blocking technology. It stays looking beautiful for much longer.
• Polyester: Polyester is mostly made from recycled materials and is the more environmentally friendly option. This fibre offers the most colour choices, along with extreme stain-resistance and fade-resistance.
• Polypropylene:  Polypropylene is soft and durable, It resists staining and fading because the colour runs through the fibre rather than just being dyed on the outside of it.
