How to Deal with Water Damaged Laminate Flooring

While there may be no reason to cry over spilled milk, it doesn’t mean you should just let it sit on your laminate floors. Leaving liquids can lead to all sorts of unintended damage not only to your flooring but to you if you slip and fall. So, let’s go through the process of dealing with spills.

Get Rid of the Spill on your Laminate Flooring

It seems pretty obvious but the first thing you’re going to have to do is remove the liquid. Towels, paper towels, wet/dry vacuum, or mop - whatever it is, the faster the liquid is removed the better the chance that the damage will be minimised.

Allow for Proper Ventilation

Whether the laminate planks seem damaged or not, allow for proper ventilation, as it will help prevent any potential further damage. Use fans, open windows, or a dehumidifier to promote circulation and speed up the drying process.

Assess the Damage

Next, assess the extent of the damage. Did the liquid get between the layers the laminate is made of? If so, you’ll need to replace the affected planks. Look for signs of warping, swelling, or any discoloration.

Replace Damaged Planks

Unfortunately, if your planks do end up damaged, you’ll have to replace them. Fortunately, replacing laminate is a fairly simple process and there’s a lot of tutorials out there to show you how!

Here’s a little breakdown on how it’s done:

If your damaged board is near a wall, you’ll have to pry off the moulding around the edge and work your way towards the damaged board. From there you’ll be able to pry out the board and replace it with a new one (cut to size).

If your board or boards are too far from the wall, you’ll have to cut it out with a plunge cut using a circular saw. Clean the subfloor after removal to remove any dried glue or dust, add some glue, and then place your new laminate board down.

Note: we always recommend buying more flooring than you’ll need so that you have some leftover - partially for occasions like these and partially because the last thing you want is to be short handed at the end of a renovation.

The great thing about laminate flooring is that it’s easy to care for and easy to replace! They offer a balance of affordability, durability, and aesthetic appeal, making them a popular choice for many homeowners.
