Carpet Stain Removal
Oops! Whether it be wine, a little present from man's best friend, or finger-paint artwork from your 4-year-old, it seems that what's not supposed to get on the carpet always does. But with modern advances in fibre technology, stain resistance is now built into the very fibres of many carpets, giving you more flooring options than ever! Top brands including Stainmaster, Shaw's Anso Nylon and Mohawk's SmartStrand carpet have done extensive testing in-house, to ensure that their products can stand up in your busy household. With the right care and maintenance, you'll be able to keep your carpet looking new; extending its life for years to come.
- Always treat the area immediately. The longer the spill sits there, the harder it will be to remove the stain.
- If it's a food spill, first scrape gently with a dull knife, removing as much solid material as possible. Gently rinse the area with water, and use a towel to absorb all the moisture.
- For mud or dirt spills, allow the mud to dry completely. Shatter the dried mud, then vacuum it up.
- If you get gum or wax on the carpet, try freezing it with an ice cube and then pick it out. Be careful not to press it further into the fibres while freezing.
- For glue, moisten a cotton ball or soft cloth with rubbing alcohol and press it on the affected area. Once the glue residue is thoroughly moistened, gently wipe it off and repeat until the carpet is clean.
- For high-volume spills, place towels or cloth over the wet area and weight with a heavy object to absorb moisture. Leave overnight.
- If your carpet is burned, simply remove the tops of the dark, burnt fibres with curved fingernail scissors. If the burn is extensive, you may need to patch or replace it.
- For messy spills, such as ketchup, makeup, chocolate, etc, be sure to blot the mess into itself, working from the outside in, preventing the spill from spreading any further.
- If spot removal solvent is necessary, use a specialized carpet spot remover, and use sparingly. Apply using a clean white cloth, and blot. There are several spot removers on the market; before you try one, test it out in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it doesn't discolour your carpet.
- Never scrub the carpet, it can potentially ruin the carpet fibres and may make your carpet look fuzzy or unwoven.
Note: Some stains cannot be removed because they permanently alter the carpet's colour. This includes acid cleaners, acne medication, chlorinated bleaches, hair dyes, iodine, insecticides, mustard with turmeric, plant fertilizers, and more. For these types of stains, call a professional.
From our suppliers: In order to maintain and protect your warranty coverage, most brands require that a minimum of one professional cleaning every 12-18 months is necessary.
ProTip: When having carpets professionally cleaned, be sure to let carpets dry completely before replacing furniture. If the carpet is wet, it can remove the stain or finish from your furniture, and stain the carpet in the process.
