Carpet Cleaning & Area Rug Care
Carpets and area rugs not only play a significant role in the interior design of your home, but they also have many practical uses. The soft fibres are comfortable under-foot, help keep a room warm, and reduce noise. It's a great choice to promote comfort in spaces such as bedrooms and living rooms.
As a beautifully crafted area rug is a perfect compliment to almost any hard surface flooring, carpet in general is a great choice for your home. There is a common misconception that carpet is bad for increasing allergens; it is actually the opposite. According to Dr. Michael Sauerhoff, PH.D. (Carpet, Asthma and Allergies - Myth or Reality), carpet fibres capture and retain allergens and prevent them from circulating in the air we breathe. Once in the carpet, any allergens can simply be cleaned from the carpet and removed from the home entirely. At End Of The Roll Flooring Centres, we carry a range of carpet that is hypoallergenic which has been specifically designed to trap an even greater quantity of allergens than regular carpet.
So, what are the best ways to keep a carpet or area rug clean and allergen free, and how often should they be spruced up?
Well, the answer all depends on how much traffic the carpet receives. Typically a well-used carpet can be vacuumed once or twice a week with a good quality vacuum to keep it clean and free of debris. So really, no more often than hardwood or laminate flooring needs to be cleaned. Of course, even with regular cleaning, it isn't possible to remove 100% of dust and dirt that builds up over time. It is recommended that your carpet be properly cleaned at least once a year. (In fact, professional cleaning may also be required for your carpet's warranty. Warranty requirements vary by brand.) This cleaning is usually done by using steam, which permeates deep into the carpet fibres to remove any trapped dust. Not only does it keep your carpet feeling amazingly fresh, it will also help to extend the life of your carpet by preventing excessive grime build up.
The next issue that many people worry about is stains, however modern carpets are designed to be resistant to them and there are many solutions to every type of stain. When you do get a stain, the first thing to do before reaching for a chemical cleaning solution is to grab a plain white cloth and blot the stain with some water. Then, using a more natural solution of white vinegar and warm water, mixed with a drop of dishwashing liquid; blot the stain again from the outside in. When treating the stain, be sure not to over saturate the area which can damage the underside of the carpet or rug. If the stain is a particularly tough one such as red wine or coffee, spray the area with a solution of club soda as quickly as possible to prevent the liquid from drying which will help to stop the stain from setting in.
It's that simple! You can have a product that sits on your floor which is soft underfoot, keeps you warm and cozy, comes in virtually any style or design you can imagine, sound proofs and helps control allergens. What's not to love?
