area rug rules for the living room

There are a lot of guidelines out there on the "dos and don'ts" of choosing and sizing the perfect area rug. The more you search online, the more you find. In the end, there are just as many rules as there are opinions, and the way you decorate your home must be personal, practical, and most importantly, it should make you feel happy every time you enter the room! Scroll down to the bottom for some beautiful photos of Area Rugs!

Rules for living room rugs

1. DO: Front legs of furniture on the rug, back legs off the rug.
This seems to be the most important rule these days, the one that trumps all others. Most designers who express their opinions online prefer and promote this, if at all possible. They say it ties the furniture together and provides a comfortable place to rest your feet. As long as the front half of the seating is on top of the rug, and the back legs are off, you've got the look.

This can be a bit more tricky in larger rooms because it requires a larger area rug, which can be hard to find. Luckily, at End Of The Roll you can have any kind of carpet bound to a custom size. As a rule of thumb, stay away from the walls by about 18 inches, leaving a border for visual appeal. Go for a rug or carpet that is easy to clean, preferably with built-in stain protection and a lower pile, in a pattern that hides any small imperfections that may arise.

It is not currently advisable to have a small area rug upon which only the coffee table sits. This is considered a design "faux pas" (translation: false step or "should not") these days, although we believe there are always some cases where the rule can be broken!

BOTTOM LINE FOR YOUR LIVING AREA:
As with all trends, design opinions have a tendency to change over time. However, an area rug is inexpensive and moveable enough to play around with. If you absolutely love it in the living room, but it's a bit small, then stick with your instincts and what makes you feel at home. But if it would work in another room, a bedroom perhaps (and yes, layering on top of carpet is okay) then consider the option of going bigger. Give your local store a call to find out how much it would cost to have a nice stainproof, 25-year warranty carpet bound to the perfect size.

You and your feet deserve it, don't you think?
